Youth Futures: Building Confidence, Leadership, Opportunity

“I wanted to give back to a program that helped me grow. Since I was in their shoes two years ago, I wanted to help them with the challenges I faced and share what worked for me.”
Almokhtar, mentor and past participant of Youth Futures.
On August 22, 144 students finished the Youth Futures program. The program has been running for 17 years. It is a six-month program for people aged 16 to 21 and helps them get ready for college, university, or a job. Students receive leadership training, mentorship, work experience, and learn about college and university life. Youth Futures is run by the OCH Foundation, the City of Ottawa, and BGC Ottawa.
Joakim, one of this year’s graduates, is new to Canada and loves technology. A friend encouraged him to join in building leadership skills and find new opportunities.
“I surprised myself during the program. Meeting so many people and making friends was amazing.”
Joakim was glad his placement was at the school he’ll attend this fall. “It helped me meet more people on campus. I’m grateful to Youth Futures for that.”
Almokhtar returned for his second year as a mentor, believing Youth Futures gives young people valuable opportunities to gain skills and support with school and work.
“Youth Futures helps youth build skills, find mentors, and get ready for work or more school. It opens doors for young people and makes the community stronger,” he says.
